Head of the household

Dec 4, 2025 (I write a lot on the same day, so some of these will be dated the same)

Today I'm reading Exodus 4, and I'm at verse 24 when the Lord comes to Moses, intending to kill him because he did not keep part of their covenant. Moses didn't keep this part of the covenant because he listened to his wife rather than obeying what the Lord told him to do. His wife, in turn, does it in anger, of course, but when I read this, I pulled up the scripture in another version of the bible to fully grasp and understand what was happening, along with a commentary. In simpler terms, Moses was head of the household, as all husbands are; if God told him to do something, it should have been done. Now, because the head of the household did not fulfill his role, it then fell to the wife to save her family. In this case, Moses hadn't circumcised his son on the 8th day as he was supposed to because his wife didn't approve, but in the end, when the wife recognized that the Lord came to kill him because of this exact thing, she took matters into her own hands and circumcised their son, again with great anger. When I read this, I paused and reflected on my life at the moment. My husband's faith is in shambles right now, and of course, I don't think the Lord is going to take him out because of it LOL, because our God is gracious, kind, and fully understands how grief works, more than us. Anyway, right now, it feels like as a wife, it's up to me to save my husband's faith so that he can be strong enough to lead the household again.

When I finally got a grip and was able to throw myself at God during my grief, I found myself praying for one thing over and over again: to get pregnant again and soon. It wasn't until right before a fast that I felt God telling me, “I hear your prayer, but I need you to shift your focus somewhere else right now, your husband”, and in just a few short days, I understood why.

24 On the way to Egypt, at a place where Moses and his family had stopped for the night, the Lord confronted him and was about to kill him. 25 But Moses’ wife, Zipporah, took a flint knife and circumcised her son. She touched his feet[b] with the foreskin and said, “Now you are a bridegroom of blood to me.” 26 (When she said “a bridegroom of blood,” she was referring to the circumcision.) After that, the Lord left him alone. (Exodus 4:24-26 NLT)
